Contract to Build Highway to Caldera was Approved

The highway, which must begin construction before January 2007, will cut travel time by 30 minutes from San Jose to the Central Pacific zone.

FCC Construccion e Itinere Infraestructura (Spain), Soares Da Costa Concessoes (Brazil) and M&S International (Costa Rica), the three companies that comprise the team, must complete this protect within 2 years. It is the third attempt made within six years to begin construction. “It is a success that it was approved because many people believed that this project was never going to be done”, says Randall Quiroz, minister of Public Works.

The 77 km (48m) highway will go from the Sabana Park to Caldera in Esperanza and will take 70 minutes to travel. The construction will add a new 38.8 km (24 m) section between Ciudad Colon and Orotina. In addition, it includes the improvement of the sections between San Jose and Ciudad Colon (14.2 km/8.8m) and Orotina to Caldera (23.8 km/14.8m).

The current route towards Calderas is 90 km (56m) and can be traveled in a minimum of 1 hour and 40 minutes.

This team is also responsible for the project to expand the highway from San Jose to San Ramon.
